What a great article, Maura! It's amazing how much human beings can endure! I was fascinated to learn about kaihōgyō. It reminded me of the time I climbed Mt. Hiei on a field trip, which in itself felt like an achievement. The idea of circling the mountain also made me think of Tiruvannamalai in India, where both locals and pilgrims walk barefoot around the sacred mountain Arunachala.
Thanks! And what a lovely memory for you. Important mountains are almost always sacred to people in the environs. In Ireland, Croagh Patrick has a pyramid-shaped peak and has an annual pilgrimage associated with it to honour the saint, but it was holy long before he co-opted it. Before that it was connected to our god, Lugh.
Glad to hear it. Keep running, Andreas!

So that's why I couldn't find you in Glasgow!
Oh well. Hopefully I'll see you sometime before Dublin 2029 (if they win the bid). Maybe World Fnatasy in Brighton next year?
Sorry to miss you, Jetse! Fingers crossed I'll be at Eastercon in Belfast and World Fantasy Con in Brighton next year.
