It's always printers...always, always printers. I own at least three but if I need something printed out I wait until I go to work to do it!

Great Read Maura

Printers indeed. I had a colour printer that refused to print black & white pages because one of the colour toners was empty...Aaaargh! I changed to a B&W printer only because for boarding passes, concert tickets and the like I only need a clear print of the bar or QR-codes in case my smartphone's battery is empty (or it otherwise malfunctions). Otherwise I try to be as paperless as possible (with the exception of books...;-)

Also, I understand to buy/keep DVDs of movies (which I do). Also, I still buy CDs from bands I like, but also because I can rip them to my computer (still: let it remain so), while keeping my still reliable CD player (in case some new format lets me down). Streaming? Get off my lawn...;-)

Finally, I both like the David Lynch and Dennis Villeneuve versions (in case of Villeneuve, the first part) of Dune. They both have their own style, and if you take that into account, their versions work, even if Lynch makes you work much harder (which I like), and he often fails, because he reaches so high.

One of my best friends is a Twin Peaks fan, but hates Lost Highway (which I haven't seen). However, when there was a David Lynch exposition (of his paintings, but also his TV series and movies) in Maastricht a few years ago, you could combine the exposition with a visit to one of his movies (which the cinemas in Maastricht showed at the same time). We went to Mulholland Drive (which both of us handn't seen) and were deeply impressed, as that was Lynch at the top of his game (as with Twin Peaks).

It's David Lynch. He can fail, sometimes even spectacularly. But when he succeeds, he's one-of-a-kind.

Anyway, great post and thanks!

A good reminder that I need to watch Blue Velvet (I know, for shame).

Totally agreed that Lynch’s art (his paintings, in Maastricht they didn't feature his soundscapes) inform his cinematic pieces (including Twin Peak, of course) and vice versa.

As to Dennis Villeneuve and David Lynch, I have a little theory:

Dennis Villeneuve delivers his best work when based (directly or indirectly) on an existing piece:

—Arrival (based on Ted Chiang’s “Story of Your Life”);

—Blade Runner 2049 (sequel of Blade Runner, which in its turn was based on Philip K. Dick’s DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP);

—Dune (based on Frank Herbert’s novel);

David Lynch works best when he writes the original screenplay, alone or in collaboration:

--Twin Peaks (with Mark Frost of Hill Street Blues);

Twin Peaks:Fire Walk with Me (with Robert Engels);

—Mulholland Drive;

—Blue Velvet;

Thus, as an SF writer, it’s better to have your novel filmed by Dennis Villeneuve. However, that adaptation may not reach the heights of Lynch’s own production. Oh well, life is hard.
